Rainbow Halo on Douglas Fir
22-degree ice crystal “halo" photographed at Lime Kiln State Park on San Juan Island.
Fine Art Forest Photography Comes Alive on Vibrant Metal Prints
Since opening my fine art Pacific Northwest photography gallery in Bellingham’s “Orca Building”, I’ve looked for every opportunity to add orca whale photography to my collection. So, I took this trip to the west side of San Juan Island to visit Lime Kiln State Park which is consistently the best place to create Pacific Northwest photography of the whales. To my disappointment, there had been no sign of any of the pods for weeks. Disappointed I walked back to my car hoping to find something else to create wall art prints of.
When I reached my car I looked up, and to my shock and wonder, this vibrant rainbow halo encircled the sun. A few strategic steps took me to the spot where this towering fir tree became the fulcrum for the solar circle to balance on, and I captured this unique tree silhouette photography art print. The halo effect is caused by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, but just how that frozen water flies is a heavenly mystery to me.
